Forty years later, I’m back in a small town. It’s a small town on Long Island, as different as can be from the Bottom Feeders Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this small town of my birth. There are artists and writers. New Yorkers, really. People who still live there part time, or used to live there. But it is small, and like Dallas, the commercial heart is just one stretch with one stoplight. There are only a few stylish stores. The deli does not have gluten-free bread.

I’ve been coming here a long time, until recently just for weekends. It started when my husband, who likes to joke that only an artist would think a restaurant makes a nice safe day job, opened a place here. At first I resented leaving the Bottom Feeders Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this city on weekends. Why would I need to leave? My life was there. And I scoffed when people said they were going to “the country.” This isn’t the country, I would mutter. I know the country. The country has cars going 60 miles an hour on dirt roads and people with deer heads and guns mounted in their basements.
